Tours

from New York Magazine, June 29 - July 6, 1998 issue

For a quick respite from the high-energy Hamptons, take a kayak tour on Shelter Island. Jay Damuck's Shelter Island Kayak Tours (Route 114 at Duvall Road; 631-749-1990) runs outings at 10a.m. daily. For $60 a person (make sure to book in advance), he'll lead the troupe around Coecles Harbor for two hours' worth of spectacular views like those of St. Gabriel's Catholic Retreat and Mashomack Nature Preserve, which promises ospreys, baby foxes, and swooping egrets. For those who prefer to brave the waters unaccompanied, the charge is a mere $50 to rent a double kayak and $30 to paddle around alone.

If you have never been kayaking, or want to learn a little more about the sport, Shelter Island, or it’s wildlife and waterways—a tour from Shelter Island Kayak may be just what you’re looking for. Bring the whole family for a tour, or come by yourself and meet other adventure-seekers, or call to ask about group trips for companies seeking a weekend get-away trip, or schools, scout groups, and more.

Tours are 2 hours long, and the cost is $60 per-person (Half price for children 12 and under). Water and snacks are provided.
