For a quick respite from the high-energy Hamptons, take a kayak tour on Shelter Island. Jay Damuck's Shelter Island Kayak Tours (Route 114 at Duvall Road; 631-749-1990) runs outings at 10a.m. daily. For $60 a person (make sure to book in advance), he'll lead the troupe around Coecles Harbor for two hours' worth of spectacular views like those of St. Gabriel's Catholic Retreat and Mashomack Nature Preserve, which promises ospreys, baby foxes, and swooping egrets. For those who prefer to brave the waters unaccompanied, the charge is a mere $50 to rent a double kayak and $30 to paddle around alone. |
